The Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) was founded on 11 October 1965 on the initiative of Altiero Spinelli, its first director.
The Institute's main objective is to promote an understanding of the problems of international politics through studies, research, meetings and publications, with the aim of increasing the opportunities of all countries to move in the direction of supranational organization, democratic freedom and social justice.
Various aspects of European integration, including institutions, economy and defence, has been one of the main fields of research at the Institute Affari Internazionali since its establishment. The IAI has conducted studies on almost all related topics: trade and single currency, European space policy, industrial policies of member states, PESC, policies regarding developing countries. Each topic is generally analyzed according to a multidisciplinary approach: political, economic and/or legal.
